Fitzwaryn School Celebrates Safer Roads: Pupils’ Initiative Leads to New Puffin Crossing Installation

The permanent puffin crossing point has been installed on Denchworth Road, just outside the Fitzwaryn School, which serves children with special educational needs.

This new crossing replaces a standard zebra crossing, following reports from students about cars often failing to stop. Fitzwaryn School caters to pupils with autism spectrum disorders and moderate to severe learning difficulties.

The installation was celebrated by pupils, teachers, and Oxfordshire county councillors Jenny Hannaby and Jane Hanna. Mrs. Hannaby praised the children’s initiative in requesting this crossing, highlighting how they voiced their concerns to the traffic advisory committee about the dangers posed by cars not stopping.

She expressed her hope that the new crossing will significantly enhance road safety for both the school and the wider community.

Stephanie Coneboy, headteacher of Fitzwaryn School, commended the pupils for raising this issue. She noted the entire community now benefits from a safer crossing, extending gratitude to everyone who contributed to the project’s realization.
