Finding Light Amid Darkness: Christmas In A Conflict-Torn World

Bethlehem, the serene city envisioned in the timeless hymn, appears tranquil in the lyrics, reminiscent of a calm night lit only by silent stars. Yet, the reality this Christmas season reveals a stark contrast, filled with the grim echoes of strife from Gaza, Palestine, and Israel—far from the peaceful reprieve envisaged by the Christmas carol.

Located in the West Bank, Bethlehem falls under the politically sensitive Palestinian territories. While the city is physically removed from the epicenter of the conflict in Gaza, it shares an environment deeply influenced by constant violence, protests, and shootings that define the region.

A pro-Palestine protest taking place recently underscored the widespread concern regarding the state of war. It is clear that the ongoing conflict has seen both sides committing dreadful acts: the lethal terrorist attacks launched by Hamas and the uncompromising retaliatory strikes by Israel.

During these turbulent times at Christmas, a key question arises: how should we relate to such abhorrent violence, relentless destruction, and rampant loss of lives?

The lyrics of the age-old carol provide a poignant reflection. They acknowledge the presence of “darkness,” “fears,” and “sin,” which feel palpable in today’s Bethlehem and the wider region. Despite the hardships, the song also illuminates a path of hope, describing a light that penetrates the darkness. It celebrates the divine presence as “Emmanuel,” translating to “God with us,” inspiring solace and optimism. It portrays God entering our world not as a fleeting contender against darkness but as an “everlasting light.”

At Christmas, we commemorate the miraculous event that unfolded in a humble Bethlehem stable over 2,000 years ago. In that moment of divine intervention, God brought hope, redemption, and unmeasurable joy into a despairing world.

As we face collective and personal challenges this Christmas—whether from witnessing the horrors unfolding in Israel and Gaza or experiencing personal struggles—I invite everyone to revisit the Bethlehem stable in spirit. It is there that a child was born, destined to be a guiding light in dark times.

In remembrance of that extraordinary moment, the carol concludes with a heartfelt plea: “O holy child of Bethlehem, descend to us we pray: Cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell: O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel.”

In this spirit, may this message bring peace, hope, and blessings to all this Christmas season.
