The inaugural ‘Party in the Park’ event in East Hanney on Saturday, July 15, brought the community together with a lively program of entertainment, featuring magicians, dancers, and performances by local bands. Organized by the St James Primary School PTA, the event successfully raised funds to enhance the school’s outdoor play area.
Theresa Wigglesworth-Yeates, secretary of the PTA, described the event as having a “happy atmosphere” and praised the favorable weather, with only a few brief showers disrupting the sunny day. Although a yellow weather warning from the MET Office meant the bouncy castle had to be canceled, this did not stop attendees from enjoying the wide variety of amusements on offer.
Highlights included a magic show, dance performances, and a student-led talent show. Local bands such as C U Tuesday, Thunderbird, and Blue Cats provided live music, adding to the festive energy. Families were treated to freshly cooked burgers and hot dogs prepared by the PTA, and beverages like Pimm’s, beer, and cider were served at the bar. The local Scouts and Guides also participated, contributing by selling sweets and toys to attendees.
Though the final fundraising total has yet to be confirmed, early estimates suggest between £2,000 and £3,000 was raised. These funds will be dedicated to improvements in the school’s outdoor play area, ensuring the space is both safe and engaging for students to enjoy during their free time.
Wigglesworth-Yeates expressed her gratitude to the local community for their overwhelming support, which played a significant role in the event’s success. Contributions came from all corners of the community, including PTA members, parents, school teachers (past and present), and residents of East Hanney and nearby areas. This collaborative spirit created a vibrant atmosphere and reinforced the strong connections within the community.
The event not only succeeded in its fundraising goals but also served as a reminder of the benefits of community involvement. It provided an engaging platform for people to come together, support the school, and strengthen their sense of belonging. The showcased performances, particularly the magic show, dance routines, and talent displays, highlighted the exceptional talents of local pupils and the wider community.
The funds raised will go directly toward upgrading the outdoor play facilities at St James Primary School. With a focus on safety and innovative activity opportunities, the project will significantly enhance the playtime experiences for students, aiding their physical and social development.
The PTA and volunteers deserve accolades for their dedication in organizing the event. From securing entertainment and coordinating refreshments to handling logistical challenges, their efforts ensured a memorable day for all attendees. The local bands, performers, and volunteers also made an invaluable contribution to creating a vibrant and lively atmosphere.
