The Wantage and Grove neighbourhood policing team from Thames Valley Police recently seized nitrous oxide canisters during a stop and search of a car in Wantage. Commonly known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a class C drug, and possessing it with the intent to get high is illegal.
The dangers of misusing nitrous oxide are well-documented. Government guidance warns that inhaling the gas, typically from a canister or balloon, can induce short-lived psychoactive effects such as euphoria, minor perceptual changes, and uncontrollable laughter.
Using nitrous oxide while driving is not only a crime but can also result in tragic outcomes. A recent case in Marcham in June 2023 serves as a somber reminder—three teenagers lost their lives after the driver, Thomas Johnson, used the substance and drove at speeds reaching 100mph. Johnson later received a sentence of nine years and four months in jail for causing the deaths of Elliot Pullen, 17, Ethan Goddard, 18, and Daniel Hancock, 18, due to dangerous driving.
In a further update, the Wantage policing team shared that an e-scooter was confiscated from a young rider. The individual was found driving illegally at almost 30mph along the A417, significantly exceeding the 15.5mph legal speed limit for e-scooters.
The authorities emphasize their role in ensuring the safety and support of Wantage, Grove, and the surrounding villages. They encourage residents to reach out if assistance is needed. You can explore local activities or create a free business profile in our business directory.
