Controversial Housing Proposal for Wantage’s Fullers Field Faces Decision Day

Stanley Thomas Pinnel Estate has submitted a proposal to develop homes on Fullers Field, west of Primrose Avenue in Wantage. This site is intended to be incorporated into the larger Crab Hill (Kingsgrove) development, which is designated for 1,500 homes, including a new primary school and employment spaces.

The planning committee of the Vale of White Horse District Council is set to make a decision regarding the approval of these plans during their meeting on Wednesday, August 20.

Concerned residents have expressed significant opposition, with 156 objections submitted across two consultations held in March and July. Only one comment in support of the development was recorded. The primary concerns involve maintaining the field as a valued local green space, the proposed housing density, increased congestion around the school, and additional strain on local schools and GPs.

Despite these concerns, council officers have recommended approval of the proposal, pending an S106 legal agreement. This agreement would require the developer to contribute financially to local education, transport, and waste management provisions.

In their report, officers noted that: “The application could support an economic and social objective through construction employment, increased investment in the local economy and providing additional market and affordable housing. Contributions towards local infrastructure could also be made.”

They also stated that “The scheme is of an acceptable design with no unreasonable impacts on existing residents. Suitable vehicular access can be provided without detriment to highway safety or severe impacts on the road network.”

Previously, a similar proposal for the same number of homes on this site was rejected by the council in 2023.
