Cheers to Resilience: The Bear Hotel’s 16-Year Legacy of Navigating Challenges and Celebrating Community

For 16 years, Jo Walkley-Pratt and her husband Keith have managed The Bear Hotel, a historic establishment overlooking Wantage’s Market Place since the era of Henry VIII. The couple, having previously worked at The Royal Oak in Wantage and GW Bar in Swindon, are celebrating 30 years in the industry in collaboration with Arkell’s Brewery.

Despite navigating challenges such as the 2008 financial crisis, recession, smoking bans, and the COVID-19 pandemic, Jo Walkley-Pratt notes that being a publican is now more challenging than ever before. She mentions the financial strain brought on by tax changes and wage increases, which have significantly elevated operational costs.

According to Walkley-Pratt, expenses such as a performance rights license for playing music, National Insurance, business rates, utilities, and rising insurance premiums are particularly burdensome. “The costs are just astronomical,” she remarks, highlighting the significant revenue required merely to break even.

The Bear Hotel employs between 30 and 40 staff members, and Jo is passionate about continuing the family legacy alongside her husband and daughters, who are gradually taking on more responsibilities. Georgia is the front-of-house manager, while Ellie serves as a sous chef. Despite the industry’s difficulties, the family remains optimistic.

The publican points out the potential benefits of reducing VAT on food, which could alleviate some financial pressures. She empathizes with patrons who compare prices to supermarket offerings, unaware of the substantial earnings required by hospitality businesses just to maintain stability.

Brett Laniosh from the Campaign for Real Ale echoes this sentiment, advocating for significant support for the pub sector. He underlines the social importance of pubs as community hubs, vital for social interaction and local engagement. Jo Walkley-Pratt concurs, observing that The Bear Hotel often serves as a social outlet for many locals, particularly the older generation.

Throughout their lengthy tenure, the Walkley-Pratts have welcomed several notable guests, including Radio 2 DJ Bob Harris, comedian Pam Ayres, and television presenter Alison Hammond. However, they have yet to encounter the pub’s reputed ghost, rumored to be a young woman who drowned in a vat of beer. Jo remains skeptical about such tales, believing that seeing is reserved for those who wish to believe.
