A total of 6,025 hours were dedicated by local residents to Sustainable Wantage, in an effort to prevent edible food from going to waste.
Jo Harvey, sustainability co-ordinator at Sustainable Wantage, remarked: “We are seeing an increase in people who really need support with food – some people come to us when they don’t have anything to eat that evening.”
She added, “However, we offer food to anyone, whatever their situation, as a way to reduce food waste – there’s always plenty to share.”
The scheme allows anyone to collect a free bag of food from The Mix on Mill Street from 1pm to 4pm on Mondays, 10am to 4pm on Wednesdays, or 10am to 4pm on Saturdays.
Over 54 tonnes of surplus food have been redistributed by Sustainable Wantage over the past year.
On Friday afternoons, the group also hosts a community larder scheme, offering food to members through a membership initiative.
Beyond addressing food waste, Sustainable Wantage engages in various environmental initiatives. The organization is supported by more than 150 volunteers who drive projects focused on food, energy, waste, biodiversity, and community.
