The grade II listed pub, King Alfred’s Head in Wantage, has become the venue for the popular “drink and draw” classes organized by Urban Life Drawing. This unique event invites artists, from novices to seasoned veterans, to enjoy a relaxed environment where they can practice life drawing.
Attendees are encouraged to enjoy a drink before and after the session, as a life model poses and participants immerse themselves in recreating the human form. As organizer Mark Ritchings explains, life drawing provides an opportunity to escape from daily routines, offering a calming and rewarding experience filled with creativity and good humor.
This inclusive event is open to participants of all experience levels, ensuring a safe and supportive atmosphere. The pub setting adds to the relaxed and sociable nature of the class, while the models contribute dynamic energy to their poses. “It often feels like a reset button for the mind,” Ritchings noted.
The King Alfred’s Head, a former coaching inn located just off Wantage Market Place, offers a variety of pints and meals, enhancing the sociable ambiance of the drawing classes. The most recent session took place on Friday, August 29, with another scheduled for Friday, September 26, from 7pm to 9pm. Interested participants can secure their spots by purchasing tickets in advance on Eventbrite.
