Lauren and Hayley Bayliss-Watts experienced the heartbreaking loss of their son, Albie, in November 2021, less than a year after he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive brain tumour. In memory of Albie, they established Albie and Beyond, a fundraising initiative under the charity Brain Tumour Research, with a strong focus on raising funds and awareness, particularly during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September.
Lauren, who works with Style Acre to support individuals with learning disabilities, described Albie as an “absolute superhero,” facing challenges with incredible strength and courage. Despite the harsh side effects of treatment and the severe diagnosis, Albie showed resilience through it all.
Albie was diagnosed at just 18 months old after experiencing a seizure and recurring morning vomiting. An MRI scan uncovered a tumour the size of a tennis ball. Following emergency surgery lasting 10 hours and intensive chemotherapy, the UK provided no further treatment options.
Hayley, who works in customer service at Westgate in Oxford, expressed the family’s commitment to preserving Albie’s memory and supporting brain tumour research to prevent other families from enduring similar pain. During his brief life, Albie profoundly impacted many hearts with his joyful spirit.
The couple has since raised more than £46,000 through Albie and Beyond. Reflecting on their journey, Lauren shared on Facebook her poignant emotions on the day their twin daughters, Astrid and Lorelai, surpassed the age that Albie reached.
For those interested in supporting the cause, the third annual Walk of Hope is scheduled for Saturday, September 27, beginning at 11 a.m. from The George in Upton. The five-and-a-half-mile walk extends to the Royal Oak pub in Didcot and returns. Participation donations are £20 for adults and £10 for children, payable in cash on the day or via JustGiving. Participants will enjoy a hot dog at the event’s conclusion and a treasure trail to amuse children along the route.
Last year’s Walk of Hope successfully contributed around £4,000 towards finding a cure. This event allows the community to unite in support of Brain Tumour Research.
