The consultation for the initial stages of plans for Wantage Market Place is set to begin on June 22. During a recent meeting with the Wantage Chamber of Commerce, Andy Sweeney, team leader for place and planning at Oxfordshire County Council, highlighted the importance of collaborating with local business owners. Drawing from his previous successful experience with the redevelopment of Romsey’s Market Place, Mr. Sweeney emphasized that these plans remain in the early stages, but it is critical they serve the needs of everyone involved.
He stated, “This could be the first step in wider pedestrianisation plans. I want people to come to Wantage, spend their time here, and spend money here.” The primary goal remains improving accessibility, although specific project details are still being developed. Early ideas include the addition of dropped kerbs to enhance accessibility, though concerns were raised about potentially increasing illegal e-scooter usage on pavements.
There is an ongoing decision process concerning the Experimental Traffic Regulation Order for the West End, which has sparked debate since its initial consultation in 2023. A critical decision will be made by Oxfordshire County Council on July 17. These regulations and their potential impacts are a concern for many local business owners, especially considering the existing taxi rank outside local landmarks such as the King Alfred’s Head pub.
The Wantage Chamber of Commerce has mobilized local traders with their call for participation, stating, “A critical decision affecting Wantage’s commercial future will be made on July 17 – and we need your voice heard.” This consultation period is described as short and decisions tight, prompting urgency in community engagement.
Concerns about pedestrianisation plans were echoed by Rob Corlett, owner of Dolphin Gallery. Back in 2023, he shared apprehensions that the plans, if not properly structured, could lead to increased congestion, affecting how customers, especially those purchasing larger art pieces, can access markets.
Local traders are encouraged to contribute their voices to ensure that the end result fosters a thriving commercial environment. Business owners can learn more and participate in the consultation process by creating a free business profile and submitting feedback through the appropriate channels.
