Running for Nin: Grandson’s Marathon Tribute Raises £4,000 for Heart Charity

Sam Barson has raised more than £4,000 for the British Heart Foundation in tribute to his grandad, who he affectionately called Nin. His grandad, who passed away in November 2023, succumbed to heart failure after struggling with other health conditions, including cancer for many years.

Mr. Barson completed his 12th marathon on Saturday, June 7, coinciding with what would have been his grandad’s birthday. His final run took him along the Ridgeway from Watlington, culminating at the monument in Wantage.

Sam expressed, “Nin’s life was profoundly impacted by his health struggles, but he exhibited immense strength and resilience. Despite cancer affecting his later years, he tackled it with remarkable fortitude. Nin also endured COPD, which often left him short of breath, but these conditions never deterred him from living life to its fullest.”

He continued, “Through our time together, Nin instilled in me valuable lessons, the most significant being to never give up and to pursue what you love most passionately.”

Mr. Barson’s dedication to honoring his grandad’s legacy began in July last year, as he participated in a series of organized and self-organized marathon events.
