The Beacon Arts Centre in Wantage has been granted funding from the Vale of White Horse District Council to facilitate a range of enhancements.
The centre offers a diverse array of events and activities, including performances by Taylor Swift and ABBA tribute acts. Despite this vibrant programming, the venue has not seen significant investment since the 1990s.
The council has successfully implemented phase one of its action plan for The Beacon. This phase introduced National Theatre Live screenings, monthly afternoon cinema events, and live music performances, enriching the cultural life of the community.
The upcoming second phase focuses on capital improvements that will elevate the external appearance of the building with bolder lighting and a revamped canopy. Additionally, the interior will see refurbished toilets and a redesigned reception layout.
An assessment of the food and drink services is planned, along with a mid-year review of fees and charges to decide on any necessary price adjustments.
Councillor Helen Pighills, cabinet member for community health and wellbeing, remarked, “Investing in arts, culture, and heritage in our district is crucial as it enhances quality of life and community wellbeing.”
She highlights, “The Beacon serves as an essential venue for community activities, contributing to the wellbeing of residents by offering a robust program of live performances, cinema events, and an affordable venue for hire for various activities including dance, sports, wellness, and community support.” For those interested in renting the venue, you can explore venues for hire in the area.
“The Beacon is also designated as a ‘Safe Space’ and hosts a community larder weekly. The recent reopening of the café, alongside our events, reinforces The Beacon as a place for people across the district to gather, fostering community connection and support,” she added.
The second phase of the action plan was approved by councillors in a cabinet meeting held on May 30. This step accompanies the approval of a new Culture, Heritage, and Creative Industries Strategy, which will be implemented in collaboration with South Oxfordshire District Council.
Collaborative efforts with national bodies such as Arts Council England, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and the Oxfordshire County Council’s Museum and Heritage Service will aid in executing this strategy.
Additionally, South Oxfordshire District Council is developing an action plan for the Cornerstone Arts Centre in Didcot, showing a regional commitment to enhancing cultural infrastructure.
