Step Back in Time: Charlton Lodge Hosts 1940s Tea Party to Celebrate 80th VE Day Anniversary

Charlton Lodge, located just outside Wantage, will host a 1940s-themed afternoon tea from 11am to 1pm on May 8 to commemorate eight decades since the end of World War Two in Europe.

Spontaneous celebrations broke out across the country in 1945 when Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill announced on the radio that the war had come to an end.

The event at Charlton Lodge will feature food, entertainment, and dancing, capturing the vibrant spirit of the 1940s. Attendees will enjoy performances by the D-Day Dollies, who will sing popular wartime songs and encourage everyone to dance and sing along.

Dr Angela Dunford, the mayor of Wantage, will be present at the celebrations.

Carla Kell, the home manager at Charlton Lodge, expressed, “Here at Charlton Lodge, we’re always grateful for an opportunity to strengthen our relationships with the community, so we’re looking forward to welcoming people for a special event marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day.”

She continued, “This is an incredibly important milestone for many residents, and we’re keen to honor all those involved. Music is a fantastic way to bring back memories for older people and a wonderful way to bring communities together, so we’re thrilled to welcome the D-Day Dollies to get everyone’s toes tapping. We’re looking forward to welcoming new and old faces into Charlton Lodge as we mark such a significant moment in history.”
