Persimmon Homes Wessex, the developer behind the Wellington Gate site on the old Grove airfield, has generously donated to the Vale & Downland Museum in Wantage. The donation supports the museum’s project to redevelop the barn gallery, focusing on stories and exhibits from the broader Vale and Downland area, including the historic airfield. The museum also plans to engage in a community art project to integrate new residents into the local culture.
Pauline Fletcher, Persimmon Homes Wessex’s sales director, expressed the company’s enthusiasm: “With our significant presence in Wantage, supporting the Vale & Downland Museum was a natural choice. The new homes at the old Grove airfield need a strong community amenity to preserve and promote the area’s history, and we are proud to contribute to this effort.”
Since its opening in the Old Surgery in 1983, the museum has celebrated the region’s human and natural history. It acts as a community hub, welcoming volunteers, school groups, and other partnerships. Lisa Gale, the museum manager, stated, “As a museum that prides itself on free access for the public, we are grateful for Persimmon’s generous donation. This support will help us continue offering activities that foster a sense of belonging and place within Wantage and the surrounding areas.”
The developer offers two, three, and four-bedroom homes starting from £284,995 at Wellington Gate. Future development plans include community input on local amenities and approvals for additional housing to serve the area’s needs. In a local context, creating a business profile can further community engagement for both new and established residents. If you’re interested in promoting your activity or business, consider submitting a directory listing or an event listing to connect with the community.
Councillor Jenny Hannaby, district councillor for Wantage & Grove Brook, praised the support: “Persimmon’s support of local institutions like the Vale & Downland Museum is invaluable, especially as it offers cultural insights to the new residents.”
In addition to this donation, Persimmon contributes £700,000 to various good causes across Britain each year through its Community Champions initiative. Notable recipients include the Wantage Literary Festival and Sustainable Wantage, reinforcing their commitment to supporting community enrichment activities.
