Tragic Accident Claims Life of Beloved Wantage Resident After Stroke and Fall

Joan Hillary Jean, a resident of Charlton Village Road, Wantage, passed away on January 8 at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Headington.

A comprehensive inquest into the death of the Bristol-born retired administrator was carried out at Oxford Coroner’s Court on February 28. The proceedings were overseen by senior coroner Darren Salter.

The inquest revealed that on or around January 3, 2025, the 83-year-old experienced a stroke and collapsed at the bottom of the stairs at her home. Following the incident, she suffered a fractured hip and remained unattended for an extended period before being found by neighbors on the morning of January 4.

She was transported by ambulance to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, where she underwent surgery on January 6. Unfortunately, her condition continued to decline, and she passed away despite receiving treatment.

Mr. Salter determined that her death was accidental.
