Wantage Honors Beloved Lollipop Lady with Heartfelt Tributes and Memorial Fund

The small town of Wantage is paying a heart-warming tribute to a beloved local figure, Dawn Holmes, who passed away at the age of 67 on Monday, November 4. Mrs. Holmes, cherished as the town’s lollipop lady, spent years ensuring the safety of children crossing the street at the end of Mill Street.

Following the announcement of her passing, the community responded with both grief and admiration. A temporary memorial was set up at the Wessex Mill corner, her well-known duty post. Now, the town has resolved to create a more permanent tribute — a memorial bench in her honor. To bring this to life, a fundraising campaign was launched.

A Community Uniting in Remembrance

Gary Couch, a local resident, took the initiative to create a GoFundMe page dedicated to raising funds for the memorial bench. Writing on the page, Mr. Couch shared, “I have set up this page to help raise the funds for a memorial bench in memory of Dawn Holmes (lollipop lady). Dawn was a much-loved member of our community, and I am sure she is going to be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.” As of earlier this week, the campaign had already collected £400 from over 30 donations, with a goal of reaching £1,000.

For local fundraising ideas or events, you can also explore opportunities to promote them in the Wantage business directory under Clubs and Societies or Event Services.

Harboring Beautiful Tributes

Tributes to Mrs. Holmes have extended beyond fundraising. A church service has been scheduled to celebrate her life on December 2 at St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Church, open to all members of the public wishing to pay their respects. In addition, outside Mrs. Holmes’ home, a heartfelt collection of balloons, cards, flowers, and lollipops—the latter a touching reference to her cherished role—has been gathered. These items will be preserved by The Rusty Cafe, which is overseeing the memorial planning.

Dawn Holmes: A Life Cherished

Steve Baker, Mrs. Holmes’ brother, expressed immense gratitude for the community’s love and support. “I didn’t know how much she was loved by the people of Wantage,” he said. “I just want to thank everyone in Wantage, from the whole family, from the bottom of our hearts.” Friends and staff at the local Sainsbury’s supermarket, which Mrs. Holmes visited daily, also left a flower bouquet and a heartfelt card at the memorial as a tribute to her memory.

Sadly, on November 4, Mrs. Holmes was attended to by paramedics at her home but was unable to recover from what is suspected to have been a heart attack. Her passing leaves behind fond memories and a large void in the Wantage community.

For those wishing to contribute to the fundraising campaign in Mrs. Holmes’ memory, donations can be made directly through GoFundMe. Additionally, the community may consider sharing similar compassionate causes or events via the Wantage business directory event submission page.
