Founded in 1924 and relocating to Grove Business Park in 1969, EMS Physio has announced its closure after a century of producing medical supplies. The company, which spanned three generations, was highly regarded for its professional standards and commitment to serving communities locally and internationally.
In a heartfelt statement, Managing Director James Greenham expressed the profound disappointment this decision has brought to staff, customers, and suppliers alike. “We’ve had an incredible team, and the dedication shown over the years has been unparalleled,” he shared. Despite their best efforts and a century of success, the economic challenges proved insurmountable.
Challenges Facing Local Businesses
The decision to close EMS Physio reflects the pressures facing UK-based manufacturers today. Rising costs, economic uncertainty heightened by events such as the pandemic, Brexit, and inflation, have driven up expenses in global markets. Mr Greenham highlighted the “unmanageable” costs of adhering to international regulations, forecasting substantial compliance expenses within the next year.
“Increasing competition and falling prices have made it difficult for smaller manufacturers to sustain operations,” he explained. With a team of around 25 employees at their Wantage factory, this closure underscores the broader challenges experienced by businesses in the region.
A Centenary Marked by Closure
This announcement comes during what should have been a celebratory 100th year for EMS Physio. “I’m glad we got to 100 years,” said Mr Greenham, acknowledging the bittersweet milestone. “My priority now is to ensure the closure process is handled as responsibly and smoothly as possible for everyone involved.”
