Gas Works and Flooding Disrupt Transport in Wantage: Council Steps in to Ease Residents’ Concerns

Residents in Wantage have been grappling with transportation challenges following gas works that commenced last week on the A417 near the Elder Way bus gate. This unexpected development forced some drivers to use the bus gate, which, under normal circumstances, could result in fines. Additionally, local roads have been severely impacted by flooding, making travel even more challenging for residents.

An anonymous resident expressed their frustration, stating: “The A417 into Wantage has been closed due to a gas leak. Residents of the Kingsgrove estate are now being rerouted to Featherbed Lane, but it’s flooded. The only other option is the Bus Gate, but using it would result in fines.”

The resident further added, “Efforts have been made to request that the council deactivate the cameras to allow safe passage through the bus gate, but these appeals have been unsuccessful.”

Olly Glover, MP for Didcot and Wantage, is aware of the issues caused by the gas works and flooding and acknowledges the impact they’re having on the community.

### Important Updates from Oxfordshire County Council

In response to the concerns raised by locals, Oxfordshire County Council delivered updates via county councillors Jane Hanna and Jenny Hannaby. They confirmed, “The gas works have indeed been extended.”

To ease concerns about accessing the bus gate, the councillors explained: “Due to the ongoing gas works, the bus gate will remain accessible to all vehicles until the works are completed. If the gas works are further extended, this temporary arrangement will also continue.”

Reassuring residents about potential fines, they stated: “Drivers who accessed the bus gate during the gas works will not be penalized.”

### How to Cancel a Fine

For residents who may have already received a fine, there is a clear solution. According to the councillors, “If a local resident has been fined, they should contact [email protected] immediately. The issue will be reviewed, and fines will be cancelled.”

The councillors also assured the community that they are working closely with local authorities to address wider concerns and provide timely updates as the situation evolves.

As the gas works continue, it’s clear that patience and cooperation are essential to navigate this period of disruption.
