Portway Car Park Undergoes Green Transformation: Major Overhaul to Improve Functionality and Boost Biodiversity

Major renovations are set to begin at Portway car park starting July 22, ushering in an eight-week project aimed at improving the parking facility while increasing its resilience and sustainability. Spearheaded by the Vale of White Horse District Council in collaboration with Thames Water, the revamped car park will incorporate innovative features to enhance its functionality and biodiversity.

Revamping the Car Park for the Future

A standout component of the renovation is the introduction of a rain garden, strategically designed to manage surface runoff from the car park. This measure not only prevents water pooling but also reduces the risk of overwhelmed drains during heavy rainfall. By utilizing soil and plant species to filter runoff, cleaner water is directed into the ground’s water table, supporting the council’s green initiatives for a sustainable future.

Enhanced Infrastructure and Greener Spaces

Visitors can look forward to a host of improvements post-renovation. Key updates include:

  • An improved parking surface to eliminate current imperfections like potholes.
  • Better lighting to enhance safety for users.
  • A clearly defined pedestrian walkway to ensure both vehicle and pedestrian safety.
  • Increased green spaces designed to foster biodiversity and improve aesthetics.

During construction, parking spaces will be significantly limited. However, pedestrian access and restroom facilities will remain available throughout, with some restrictions during final surfacing work between August 26 to September 1.

A Safer and Brighter Portway Experience

Post-renovation, Portway car park will offer a safer and more welcoming environment. Enhanced lighting and a smoother surface will improve the parking experience, while additional green spaces and the marked pedestrian footpath will create a shared, functional area that promotes both safety and biodiversity.

Highlighting the project’s environmental and practical benefits, Councillor Mark Coleman, deputy leader and cabinet member for environmental services and waste, stated, “We are pleased to offer a natural solution to mitigate flooding while creating a safer, greener, and brighter facility. The augmentation of green spaces aligns with our mission to enhance mental wellbeing.”

Alternative Parking Options During Construction

During refurbishment, visitors requiring parking alternatives can utilize Limborough Road or Mill Street, both located within OX12 9AJ, where Portway parking permits will remain valid.

The council has expressed its gratitude for visitors’ patience during the improvements, assuring everyone that the changes will be well worth the temporary inconvenience.
