The jovial community of Uffington, located just outside of Wantage, is celebrating the installation of two new pieces of play equipment on the village’s Jubilee Field. Ensuring the local play area is inclusive and exciting for all children, the additions include a fun rope climbing frame, known as the space net, and a triple swing set designed to entertain local disabled and older children.

Generous Funding

The funding for the new additions to the play area came from a variety of noteworthy sources, including developer contributions and a grant from the White Horse Show Trust. The local parish council also significantly contributed towards the project.

Simon Jenkins, chairman of Uffington Parish Council, elatedly said:

“The village is delighted to have been able to install these two new items of play equipment for older children, to complement those which have been available for some years for the younger ones.

“We are extremely grateful to the developers of the Jacksmeadow estate for the S106 contribution to the parish, and to the White Horse Show Trust.”

Fenella Oberman, a parish councillor who led the project, added:

“It was clear during our planning application consultation that local families were hugely supportive of this exciting project.”

“We’re delighted to be able to provide local children with this new equipment in time for summer and for many years to come.”

The parish council celebrated the culmination of their project with a small event on Tuesday, June 11, to show appreciation for those who contributed to it.

Revitalising the Area

Uffington’s new equipment is just one of several upgrades to locally funded playgrounds across the region, particularly in and around Wantage. This project is part of a broader initiative to revitalise and improve communal areas for residents.

Last month, the Smith’s Wharf play area in Wantage reopened its gates for the first time in three years, following a grand £70,000 refurbishment. Initially closed in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 lockdown, the park was transferred to the Vale of White Horse District Council in October 2021. A redevelopment plan was initiated for the area, and after months of hard work and significant investment, the playground was officially reopened.

Longtime Wantage resident Rodney Tillotson expressed his delight at the park’s reopening, commenting on the evident pleasure for both adults and children to have the amenity restored to its former glory.

With continuous efforts by the local council and thoughtful contributions from residents and developers alike, Uffington’s community demonstrates its steadfast approach towards inclusive development that caters to the well-being of all its residents.
