The Faringdon and District branch of the Royal British Legion, an organisation renowned for its unwavering support of war veterans, commemorated an incredible milestone on Saturday, June 1. Celebrating 100 years of dedicated service, the branch hosted a vibrant event in Faringdon’s town centre, reflecting the spirit of community, respect, and remembrance.
The event, led by Mary van Andel Cadogan, honorary secretary of the Faringdon and District Branch, drew almost 100 attendees and was met with great enthusiasm. “It was a fantastic day with a great turnout,” said Cadogan, extending her thanks to all who participated.
A Day to Celebrate Unity and Reflection
Kicking off with an impressive parade, the event transitioned into a reflective church service at All Saints’ Church in Faringdon. This service honored the organisation’s century-long commitment to supporting veterans and their families. Following this, attendees gathered at the war memorial to pay tribute to those who served, creating a deeply poignant atmosphere.
In a touching nod to previous generations, many younger participants wore their ancestors’ medals, offering a powerful link between past and present as they celebrated the contributions and sacrifices of their forebears.
Notable Guests and Attendees
The celebration welcomed a wide array of distinguished guests, underscoring the significance of the occasion. Among those present were Colonel Neil Sutherland OBE, Deputy Lord Lieutenant, and James McNamarra, High Sheriff of Oxfordshire, who represented His Majesty. Also attending were local dignitaries, including Mayors, Councillors, and Aldermen, alongside veterans and representatives from the armed forces and emergency services. Their presence highlighted the strong ties between the community and the Royal British Legion.
Future Plans and Commemorations
Looking ahead, the Faringdon branch is focused on preparing for another momentous occasion: the 80th anniversary of D-Day. This significant day will be commemorated on Thursday, June 6, at 9:15 am, with activities such as the lighting of a beacon and a wreath-laying ceremony in Faringdon Market Square.
