On July 4, Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak’s call for a General Election sparked responses from Liberal Democrat MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, Layla Moran, and Labour MP for Oxford East, Anneliese Dodds. Both MPs criticized the current government’s performance while expressing readiness to campaign for re-election in their respective constituencies.
Clear Choice for Voters, Says Moran
Layla Moran framed the upcoming election as a clear choice between “the Liberal Democrats who are fighting for our local area” and “the out-of-touch Conservatives who have taken us for granted.” She also suggested that Labour is “out of the race here and just can’t win this time.”
Moran emphasized her commitment to representing her constituents, describing her parliamentary tenure as one of “relentless advocacy for local people.” She expressed her determination to continue addressing key local challenges, including limited access to GP appointments, rising housing costs, and the environmental impact of sewage pollution. “I am determined to continue working hard for our area and being the strong voice we need in Parliament,” she declared.
Dodds Committed to Change
Similarly, Labour MP Anneliese Dodds reflected on the privilege of serving Oxford East and confirmed her intent to stand for re-election. She called for a decisive break from the past fourteen years of Conservative governance, citing a period of “chaos and decline.”
Dodds outlined Labour’s vision for addressing critical national and local issues, such as cutting NHS waiting lists, recruiting thousands of new teachers, tackling the cost-of-living crisis, and establishing GB Energy, a publicly-owned green energy company. “I know how desperately Oxford needs a Labour government to enact change,” she stated.
New Boundaries, New Opportunities
The re-drawing of constituency boundaries in Oxfordshire adds another dimension to the upcoming election. The county’s six current constituencies will soon become seven, with a new Bicester and Woodstock constituency set to be created alongside Banbury.
Currently, Banbury is represented by Conservative MP Victoria Prentis, while Robert Courts, John Howell, and David Johnston serve as Conservative MPs for Witney and West Oxfordshire, Henley, and Wantage, respectively. However, John Howell has announced that he will not stand for re-election.
Moran and Dodds were the only MPs who responded to inquiries ahead of the announcement.
