An Oxfordshire man, Daniel Lewis of Woodfield, Wantage, faced trial at Oxford Crown Court on serious charges of child abuse. However, the jury delivered a “not guilty” verdict on all counts on Monday, May 20th.
Lewis was originally charged with six counts of wilfully assaulting a child and two counts of wilfully ill-treating a child. Midway through the trial, one count of wilful ill-treatment was dropped. Allegations included smothering the child with pillows, pushing him, digging his knuckles into the boy’s legs, slapping him, and gripping him around the neck.
The boy at the center of the case, whose identity is protected by legal restrictions, testified and described Lewis as “manipulative and cruel.” These serious accusations could have led to severe penalties if Lewis had been convicted.
Not Guilty Verdict
After careful deliberation, the jury found Lewis not guilty of all charges on May 20th. The verdict was primarily due to insufficient evidence to substantiate the abuse allegations. As a result, the jury determined that the evidence presented did not warrant a conviction.
The trial involved a thorough examination of the facts, arguments from both the prosecution and the defense, and close scrutiny by the jury. Ultimately, the conclusion was reached that the charges could not be upheld.
Public Reaction to the Verdict
The acquittal of Lewis triggered a mixed response among the community. While some underscored the principle of “innocent until proven guilty,” others expressed unease over the nature of the allegations.
