Care UK Launches ‘The Big Dementia Conversation’ to Boost Understanding and Support for Dementia Patients

Care UK, the operator of Charlton Lodge in Wantage, has introduced a new initiative aimed at fostering discussion and raising awareness around dementia. Known as ‘The Big Dementia Conversation’, this initiative features an online advice hub designed to deepen understanding of the condition and provide practical support for those affected.

‘The Big Dementia Conversation’ highlights lesser-known symptoms of dementia while offering guidance from Care UK’s specialists, who collectively possess over 40 years of expertise in the field.

Speaking about the initiative, Angela Zuraw, Regional Director at Care UK, said:

“Here at Care UK, we’re passionate about raising awareness and reducing misconceptions around dementia. It can be challenging to know how best to support your loved one, or what not to say – which is why we launched The Big Dementia Conversation to get everyone talking.”

In addition to encouraging open dialogue, the initiative shares practical advice for families and friends caring for individuals living with dementia, offering five simple but impactful tips to provide meaningful support.

Top Five Tips for Supporting Loved Ones Living with Dementia

  1. Keep Loved Ones Active: Maintaining some degree of independence is crucial. Encourage participation in daily activities such as folding laundry, setting the table, or watering plants.
  2. Reminisce About Fond Memories: Revisiting cherished moments through photo albums or storytelling can create a comforting, engaging environment.
  3. Enjoy Music from the Past: Listening to familiar tunes from their past can evoke positive emotions and memories, providing therapeutic benefits and moments of joy.
  4. Maintain a Routine: Stability is key for those with dementia. A consistent daily schedule can foster a sense of familiarity and comfort.
  5. Interact with Nature: Spending time outdoors or in a garden can be soothing. Activities such as birdwatching or a walk in the park can have a calming effect and promote wellbeing.

Angela Zuraw added, “This Dementia Action Week, we’re keen to share a little of our expertise to help the community. We hope these tips can guide people in providing better support to loved ones with dementia.”

The advice hub, available at Care UK’s website, serves as a platform for starting conversations about dementia and providing resources to support individuals and their families.
