Former Coach Repeatedly Defies Sexual Harm Prevention Order, Lands in Jail

David Smith, a 71-year-old resident of Evenload Close, Grove, has been sentenced to jail for breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). Smith was initially convicted in June 2021 after authorities discovered over 1,000 child abuse images on his devices, including 149 in the most severe legal category, depicting child rape. His prior sentence included a suspended 10-month term, an 18-month probation, and a 10-year SHPO.

Further Breaches Lead to Jail Sentence

Despite the 2021 court order, Smith reappeared at Oxford Crown Court on April 16 to face charges of violating the SHPO, which included possessing additional illegal material through an unregistered Twitter account. Judge Michael Gledhill sentenced Smith to 28 months in prison, citing the severity of his repeated offenses. While acknowledging Smith’s intelligence, family background, and initial compliance with rehabilitation efforts, the court emphasized the need for justice and public safety.

Details of Violations

Prosecutor Christopher Pembridge outlined the breaches, which included Smith’s use of chatrooms, a hidden Twitter account, and the discovery of unregistered email addresses. Esafe monitoring software alerted police on September 15, 2022, when Smith accessed illegal content via Twitter. Upon investigation, authorities found four Category C images depicting children aged seven to eleven on his laptop.

Additionally, police uncovered evidence of Smith using chatrooms to access pornography under usernames such as “DavidCoaching” and “@NiceGuy.” Investigators also found three undisclosed email addresses, though only one was actively used.

Defense and Rehabilitation Efforts

Smith’s legal defense argued his remorse and emphasized his participation in rehabilitation efforts such as the ‘Map to Change’ program and support from the Lucy Faithfull Foundation, an organization focusing on preventing child exploitation. However, the court questioned the effectiveness of these measures due to Smith’s reoffending. His barrister suggested that stress in Smith’s life had led to the reliance on pornography, highlighting an ongoing struggle with addiction.
