Didcot Charity Makes Merry Waves with Ninth Annual Gift Appeal for Hospitalized Kids

In the world of charity celebrations, the ninth annual appeal of a Didcot-based organization has seen remarkable success. This ongoing effort has delivered over 1,000 gifts, brightening the Christmas season for young patients, their siblings, and their families across several care facilities. Notable beneficiaries include the Oxford Children’s Hospital, the Neonatal Care Unit, Ronald McDonald House, Helen and Douglas House Hospice, and Viking House, which provides respite for children with disabilities.

Launched annually in late September, the campaign garners widespread support. This year, participation even extended to a company in Plymouth. With record-breaking enthusiasm, many local organizations, businesses, schools, restaurants, and shops rallied together, resulting in an unprecedented haul of gifts.

Thousands of individuals contributed to the success of this initiative, offering gifts that included Lego sets, wooden trains, play dough, bubble wands, chocolate selection boxes, action figures, and baby toys. These thoughtful presents, totaling more than 350 items, were delivered on December 15, bringing smiles and holiday cheer to hospitalized children spending their festive season away from home.

Over its more than two decades of dedication, this charity has allocated proceeds exceeding £100,000 to the Oxford Children’s Hospital, with significant projects such as a £40,000 donation in 2017 to fund a single patient room in the teenage ward. The charity also oversees the highly acclaimed Sleigh2Give initiative, started in 2015 as a Christmas toy appeal in partnership with Sainsbury’s in Didcot. The program, now a cornerstone of the charity’s efforts, continues to spread joy to children in hospitals, hospices, and to the vulnerable and less fortunate.

This year, an estimated 1,600 gifts worth £50,000 were collected and distributed—a milestone even for this high-achieving campaign. A standout contribution came from Wallingford resident Lee Crook, who raised over £700 through a month-long 10,000-step challenge during November. His creative effort highlights the importance of individual dedication in advancing the cause.

The annual Sleigh2Give event also included toy drop-offs, coordinated in part with initiatives like SSNAP (Support for the Sick Newborn and their Parents), uplifting young patients during a challenging time. With Santa and a lively dancing tree adding to the festivities, it’s a special date that has grown to symbolize the spirit of giving.

Organizers expressed heartfelt gratitude to supporters across Oxfordshire and beyond. Their collective efforts not only brought joy to those in need but also provided essential aid to vulnerable families, leaving a tangible positive impact during the festive season and beyond.
