UK Patients Embrace Digital Health Services Amid Pandemic: A New Era for Healthcare?

General Practices, or GPs, throughout the United Kingdom have embraced online systems that allow patients to book appointments, consult with their doctors, and access personal medical records conveniently from home.

This digital shift became particularly significant during the coronavirus pandemic, as it minimized potential Covid-19 transmissions. Government restrictions prompted patients to use online options instead of visiting surgeries in person, leading to a noticeable surge in usage. Medical practices actively promoted these platforms to ensure safe and continual patient care.

The scale of this adoption is only now becoming clear. According to NHS England, over six months, from April to September, there were 171,869 online applications recorded across 67 GP surgeries within the former NHS Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group area. On average, this equals roughly 28,645 submissions per month.

Of these, most submissions were clinical in nature—patients seeking help for medical concerns accounted for 138,992 applications. The remaining 32,877 were administrative tasks, like requesting fit notes or repeat medication prescriptions.

It is important to note that this data reflects the volume of submissions, not the number of individual users or total registrants. NHS England clarified that not all registered patients in this region, with a population of around 810,000, are actively using or registered for these digital systems. Additionally, data submission compliance by all GP surgeries is not yet complete.

Professor Kamila Hawthorne, chair of the Royal College of GPs, highlighted that the effectiveness of online systems in healthcare varies greatly among practices. While these platforms help some manage demand and address patient needs efficiently, others experience increased strain, especially during peak times like Monday mornings. Professor Hawthorne points out that, while helpful, technology is not a one-size-fits-all solution and cannot address all patient needs.

England’s nationwide statistics reveal a similar trend. In September alone, there were 2.4 million online submissions, with over 1.6 million being clinical enquiries. Currently, nearly 5,000 GP surgeries across the UK—representing about three-fourths of all practices—have implemented these online systems.

The NHS has reiterated that GP practices must offer patients multiple options, including telephone, in-person, and online consultations. As part of an ongoing initiative to improve GP service access, the NHS aims to broaden digital tools and enhance telephone systems. Since 2019, these efforts have also brought approximately 34,000 more staff members into GP practices, strengthening patient care and accessibility.
