Surging Floodwaters Paralyse Oxfordshire Link Road, Stirring Calls for Urgent County Council Intervention

The main thoroughfare linking the towns of Wantage and Faringdon in Oxfordshire, UK, faced significant flooding starting Monday, December 4. This caused disruption for local businesses, with many immobilized on the main road and in the nearby W&G estate, while drivers were forced to find alternate routes.

Thames Travel had to halt its X35 bus service between Wantage and Faringdon last Monday, Thursday, and Saturday. The persistent flooding made travel along the main road impossible, leading to the termination of X35 services at Wantage. A temporary shuttle bus was introduced on a diversion route via Kingston Bagpuize to serve Faringdon and Stanford, but no buses currently serve East Challow as a result of the blockages.

The flooding has prompted swift calls to action from Ridgeway ward district councillor Dr. Paul Barrow, alongside support from affected local businesses. These businesses have urged Oxfordshire County Council to provide immediate financial aid and work towards a permanent solution to prevent recurring flood issues along the critical roadway. They emphasized that flooding from Storm Ciaran just a month prior had caused similar disruptions, yet no substantial measures to address the problems have been implemented.

Emma Barnard, the owner of Vale Hydrotherapy, located in the W&G estate, voiced her frustrations, revealing two full days of operational losses so far, with further disruption likely given the forecasted rainfall. Similarly, Dr. Barrow noted severe financial losses for businesses like Mellor’s Garage and Vale Hydrotherapy, amounting to thousands of pounds, as customers were unable to access these premises.

Dr. Barrow also pointed to the lack of maintenance of critical infrastructure, such as ditches and road culverts, which he attributed to inadequate attention from the county council. While he acknowledged ongoing safety concerns, he stressed the immediate necessity of clearing ditches and implementing proactive measures.

In response, Oxfordshire County Council stated that flooding issues in the area are challenging due to the seasonal rise in water levels. However, they reassured the community of their continued efforts to alleviate the situation in partnership with district councils and local landowners. Measures include vegetation clearance, ditch maintenance, and desilting operations on the brook.
