A prime feature of the occasion was the children’s choir from Wantage Primary Academy. These young vocalists enchanted the audience with the purity of their youthful voices, initiating the evening’s joyful festivities. Their performance was warmly complemented by Christmas treats, including mulled wine and mince pies, which not only filled the air with an inviting aroma but also added warmth and comfort to the chilly evening.
The festivities began with a musical ensemble led by the Wantage Silver Band, which played a pivotal role in spreading holiday cheer. Their performance has become a cherished component of the annual event, capturing the hearts of participants year after year.
Following the musical performances, parts of the Nativity story were recited by various community members, adding a spiritual aura to the evening. A key participant in this segment was Neil Townsend, the leader of Wantage Community Church, whose involvement underscored the strong relationship between local churches and the wider community.
Adding to the excitement, Santa Claus made an early appearance, delighting residents as he distributed sweets from a beautifully crafted sack, designed by the local Wantage & Grove Quilting Society—a true reflection of local craftsmanship and community pride.
The Kingsgrove Café, which typically closes earlier, extended its hours to accommodate over 200 attendees. The café provided hot drinks and pastries, further enhancing the warmth and festive atmosphere of the evening.
This memorable event was a collective effort, made possible by the enthusiastic participation of several organizations, including St. Modwen, Vale of the White Horse District Council, and the Wantage Community Church. The seamless collaboration demonstrated the strength of community ties in Wantage.
The Kingsgrove public square was adorned with a stunning Christmas tree, which became the focal point of the celebrations. Organized by Kingsgrove managing agents, Preim, the tree embodied the spirit of the season and was admired by everyone in attendance.
Paul Gander, pastor at Wantage Community Church, shared his thoughts on the event: “It was our third Christmas tree light switch-on at Kingsgrove, and the event continues to grow year on year.” Pastor Gander commended the Wantage Primary Academy Choir, whose angelic voices ushered in the Christmas festivities. Looking ahead, he added, “We look forward to next year and repeating this new tradition at Kingsgrove,” underscoring the growing significance of this annual celebration in strengthening community bonds.
