Wantage Community Support Service: Four Decades of Inclusive Care and Legacy of Unity

The upcoming disco event on December 2nd is generating excitement within the local community. This event, aimed at those who access services through the Wantage Community Support Service (CSS), also welcomes the families and carers of service users, fostering a multi-generational atmosphere of inclusion and celebration.

Since its grand opening in 1983 by Princess Diana, the centre has been a cornerstone of care in Wantage. Initially known as the Charlton Training Centre, it has evolved into Wantage CSS, touching the lives of more than 200 individuals over its nearly four-decade history. This evolution reflects its ongoing commitment to providing vital support for adults requiring care in the community.

Councillor Tim Bearder, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, has praised the centre for its long-standing legacy of empowering individuals with special needs. Since its inauguration, the centre has played an essential role in helping people lead fulfilling and independent lives, while fostering a strong sense of community.

One of the centre’s original attendees, Keith Tollett, reminisced about meeting Princess Diana during the inauguration, recalling her as “pretty, kind, and lovely” to everyone she met. His memories highlight the warmth and personal touch that marked the centre’s beginnings.

Back in the 1980s, the Charlton Training Centre focused on functional skills and vocational training, offering activities such as woodwork, carpentry, and gardening. Products made and grown by service users were sold to generate funds, promoting self-sufficiency and instilling confidence in participants. This emphasis on inclusivity and practical learning laid the foundation for the centre’s continued success.

As care needs grew more complex, the centre adapted accordingly, culminating in the creation of Wantage CSS in 2017. Today, the centre’s services extend well beyond its walls. Wantage CSS not only provides support within the facility but also organizes outings to museums, local landmarks, and scenic walking areas, creating opportunities for cultural enrichment and social connection.

The Wantage Community Support Service continues to embody the values of unity, care, and personal growth, supporting the community in meaningful and transformative ways. Its journey from the Charlton Training Centre to the present day is a testament to its enduring impact on the lives of those it serves.
