The construction of a discount supermarket, planned to be built next to Elm Farm Business Park near Wantage, remains delayed. Plans for the supermarket were originally submitted over two years ago by Lidl and GSC Estates. However, these were initially rejected due to concerns over the use of green space.
A revised application, addressing these concerns, was submitted by Lidl and GSC Estates in February 2022. This updated proposal gained approval thanks to significant public support. In October of that year, it was announced that construction was slated to start in January, with the supermarket expected to open its doors in early 2024.
Despite this initial timeline, progress has been slower than anticipated. A Lidl spokesperson revealed earlier this year that the company must resolve specific planning conditions with the local council before construction can proceed.
When planning permission is approved, it often comes with attached conditions requiring further details to be submitted and approved. In recent months, Lidl has submitted numerous “discharge of conditions” applications to comply with these requirements. While some have been approved, others have been rejected, causing ongoing delays. As such, no specific date for the start of construction has yet been confirmed.
Prospective shoppers looking forward to the new Lidl will need to wait a little longer before enjoying the convenience of the discount store in the area.
