Wantage Motorist Centre Relocates to Historic Building, Emphasizes Importance of Independent Traders in Town Economy

Wantage Motorist Centre, a longstanding business that has served the community since 1973, has moved to a new location in a historic building off Market Square. This move marks an exciting new chapter for the company, now operating from the former ‘Badgers’ shop, a building with roots dating back to the 16th century. The relocation follows the retirement of the centre’s previous owner, Chris Dykes.

The business is now under the ownership of Martin Gillott, who has been part of Wantage Motorist Centre since he left school at the age of 16. Martin took over the reins, combining his lifelong passion for cars with the opportunity to run his own business. The centre’s relocation was commemorated on April 1 by Wantage MP David Johnston, who officially opened the new shop. Johnston praised the motorist centre as “a great asset to the town,” while Wantage Mayor Jim Sibbald highlighted the significance of supporting independent traders in the area.

Martin expressed his enthusiasm for the relocation and his excitement about running a business he has been deeply connected to since his youth. The move to the distinctive Badgers building, situated in the heart of Wantage, provided the ideal setting to fulfill his dream of managing a car parts and accessories shop. Local traders and residents alike have warmly welcomed the centre’s transition to its new home.

The new location at 21 Market Place is rich in history. Over the centuries, the building has undergone numerous transformations. The second-floor window, which looks onto an alleyway, was notably a favorite of poet laureate Sir John Betjeman. In the late 19th century, the building housed a saddlery run by Daniel Howse and later became a milliner’s shop under Alice Dixon in the early 20th century. During World War II, a menswear shop run by George Penney operated there, with his family continuing the business afterward. In the 1990s, the shop became known as Badgers and later operated under the name Dapper Street until its recent transformation.

The relocation of Wantage Motorist Centre brings fresh energy to the local economy, contributing variety and supporting independent business. It also revives the historic charm of the old Badgers building, cementing its place as a valued part of Wantage’s vibrant community life.
