Community Garden in West Lockinge, Oxfordshire

Photos by Howard Hill

The Parkinsons.Me Community Garden in West Lockinge, Oxfordshire, is an inspiring initiative bringing people together to support those affected by Parkinson’s. This garden, a testament to the values of Parkinsons.Me, is run by dedicated volunteers striving to make a meaningful impact in their community.

Designed as a serene environment, the garden offers a tranquil space for reflection while also encouraging community involvement. Volunteers gather on the first Saturday morning of each month to help maintain the grounds. Over time, the garden aims to expand its offerings with exercise equipment, spaces for communal gatherings and celebrations, and areas to cultivate fresh fruits and vegetables. These additions are intended to positively affect the well-being of individuals living with Parkinson’s.

The garden has been developed entirely through volunteer efforts and has benefitted from essential grants, including support from the Trust for Oxfordshire’s Environment and the FCC Communities Foundation. It has also gained public attention, having been showcased on the BBC’s Gardeners’ World in September 2019.

The garden warmly welcomes everyone, especially families impacted by Parkinson’s, to enjoy its evolving features. Regular Saturday sessions provide an opportunity for deeper participation in this uplifting project.

For businesses or organizations looking to give back, the community garden offers corporate volunteer days. These are perfect opportunities for teams to step out of the office, enjoy some fresh air, engage in physical activity, and contribute to a meaningful cause. Many companies already offer volunteer days as part of their employee programs, and this project is an excellent choice for making a real difference.

Situated on the edge of West Lockinge, just a mile and a half east of Wantage, the garden is accessible via a bridle path. Using the What3Words app, you’ll find the garden gate at arise.paler.gazed. A location map is also available for guidance.
