National Lottery Award of £170,000 granted to Sustainable Wantage

Sustainable Wantage, a community action group based in Wantage, has been awarded £170,000 from the National Lottery. This funding will support the group’s three-year Sustainable Futures programme aimed at addressing the cost-of-living crisis, promoting climate action, and enhancing biodiversity in the town’s green spaces.

The funding will enable the group to expand its well-known projects, including Wild Wantage, the community fridge, the repair café, and the library of things. Additionally, the group plans to initiate new projects to further support the environment and the local community. Jez Elkin, co-chair, expressed deep gratitude for the recognition of the group’s ongoing community and environmental efforts.

Jo Harvey, manager of The Mix Community Space on Mill Street, will step into the role of sustainability coordinator for the project. Recognized for her advocacy of eco-friendly community initiatives, Harvey is excited to collaborate with local residents on new environmental projects. Drawing inspiration from efforts such as the Low Carbon Hub’s renewable-energy installations and the Green Space Gardens scheme, she aspires to bring similar successes to Wantage.

The Sustainable Futures programme aims to benefit Wantage by fostering local engagement and enabling community-driven solutions.
