Churches in Wantage, Grove and the nearby villages

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul, Wantage

Looking for a Sunday service, an old building to look round, or someone to talk to about a christening? This page sets out where the churches in Wantage are, what kinds of congregation meet in the town, and what you will find out in the villages. It also covers how to check a service time, how baptisms and weddings usually work, and which local schools are church schools.

The short version

  • The Church of England parish takes in two buildings: the medieval parish church of St Peter and St Paul in the middle of town, and Holy Trinity at Charlton, just east of Wantage Market Place.
  • The parish church is Grade I listed.
  • Independent and evangelical congregations meet in the town as well, including Wantage Baptist Church and Wantage Community Church.
  • Most villages nearby have their own parish church, usually the oldest building in the village.
  • Times shift with the season, so check each church’s own website before you set out.

Churches in Wantage and where they stand

Start with the parish church. St Peter and St Paul stands in the centre of town, a minute or two from the shops, and it has been the main Anglican church here since the Middle Ages. The same parish also looks after Holy Trinity at Charlton, about 1.3 km east, so one parish runs two buildings. Contact details and service arrangements for both sit on the parish’s own website.

Good to know: Grade I covers only a small share of listed buildings in England, so the parish church is of national interest, not just local interest.

Alongside the parish there are independent congregations. Wantage Baptist Church is an independent evangelical church in the town. Wantage Community Church describes itself as a friendly church with a family atmosphere and a modern feel. Both publish their own meeting arrangements, which is the detail worth checking rather than taking it second hand.

The streets around the parish church are due to change: the market place improvements scheme was in planning at the last check, September 2026.

The directory keeps its own list of local places of worship, and it updates when a listing does.

If the one you want is not showing, the full directory of businesses, clubs and groups is the next place to look.

Village churches around Wantage

Village churches here follow a pattern: one old building, a smaller congregation, and a service pattern that may not run every week. Some villages share clergy and rota their services, so a church can be open and busy one Sunday and quiet the next. That is worth a check before you drive out, especially in winter.

The distances below are straight lines from the middle of town, so allow a little more by road. Each village page carries its own introduction, photos and history, and several of these villages sit at the foot of the Downs, so a visit pairs well with a walk.

VillageDistance and direction from Wantage Market PlaceA mapped walk from the village
East Challow1.8 km westThe Wantage Arm and the Wilts & Berks Canal, 4.2 miles (6.8 km)
Ardington3.4 km eastThe Hendreds and Ardington, 4.3 miles (6.9 km)
Childrey3.7 km westChildrey and the Challows from Wantage, 7.2 miles (11.6 km)

Opening during the week varies from village to village. Some churches are unlocked in daylight hours, others are kept locked with a keyholder nearby. The porch notice usually says which, and it is more reliable than the churches in Wantage town centre for telling you who to ring.

Grove and the new estates

Grove lies about 2.1 km north of town and has its own church life, with a Church of England school in the village. Two large sites are changing the place. Grove Airfield (Wellington Gate) was being built at the last check, September 2026, with about 2,500 homes by Persimmon Homes, a local centre, a community hub and a community park. Monks Farm in north Grove, about 885 homes by David Wilson Homes, was also being built at the last check, June 2026.

Neither plan lists a new church building. On a new estate, anything that starts up is more likely to meet in a hall or a community hub than in a new building of its own. If you have just moved into one of those roads, ask at the hub and at the existing churches in Wantage and Grove about what meets locally.

How to check a service time

Most churches in Wantage publish their times on their own website, and those are the times to trust. Here is the order that saves the most back and forth.

  1. Decide what you want: an Anglican parish service, an independent or evangelical church, or a one-off such as a carol service.
  2. Open that church’s own site first. Patterns change for Christmas, Easter and the school holidays.
  3. For the Anglican parish, check both buildings together, since the town church and Holy Trinity at Charlton share one parish and one rota.
  4. Look at What’s on for dated services and community events in and around town.
  5. If you need step-free entry, a hearing loop or room for a pushchair, email or ring ahead and ask.

Tip: if you are visiting for the first time, arriving five or ten minutes early gives you time to find a seat and ask where children go.

Baptisms, weddings and funerals

You do not need to book to attend a service, but a baptism is arranged in advance rather than on the day. In the Church of England a christening normally takes place at a service in the parish where you live or worship, so the first step is to contact the parish and talk through dates and what happens on the day.

Weddings work differently. Church of England rules expect a connection to the parish: living in it, having been baptised there, or having worshipped there regularly over a period are among the ways couples qualify. The parish can tell you whether yours counts and what notice is needed. Independent churches set their own arrangements, so ask them direct.

For funerals, people living in the parish are normally entitled to a service at the parish church. In practice a funeral director will usually make the arrangements with the church on the family’s behalf.

Carols, festivals and one-off services

Carol services, Christingles, harvest festivals and remembrance services are the dates people search for most. They are set afresh each year, so a live list is more use than anything typed out on a page like this.

Date to be confirmed: Christmas tree lighting and carol concert; It’s A Christmas Carol concert at Holy Rood (usually December).

For carols in December, check the village church notices too. Smaller services in the villages are not always listed in town, and some of the best attended are the ones announced on a board by the gate.

Walks that take in village churches

Walking is a good way to see several old churches in one go, because most of them sit at the heart of their village. The easiest from the middle of town is Wantage town and the Letcombe Brook, 1.8 miles (2.9 km) and rated easy, which loops through the centre and along the brook.

Each walk page gives the distance, the climb, where to park and step-by-step directions. Field paths can be muddy from autumn to spring, so boots are worth it even on the short routes.

Church of England schools near Wantage

Several local schools are church schools, which matters if you are choosing a primary. Wantage Church of England Primary School takes children from 3 to 11 and was rated good at its last inspection, February 2025. Grove Church of England School takes 4 to 11 and was rated requires improvement, September 2024. Villages including East Challow, Childrey, East Hendred and Uffington have Church of England primaries too.

Grades and inspection dates for every local school sit on the schools page, which is kept up to date. A church school does not require a family to attend church, but some use faith-based criteria if they are oversubscribed, so read the school’s own admissions policy before you apply.

Before you set out

A quick check saves a wasted trip, particularly around Christmas and Easter when services move. Run through this list:

Before You Set Out

  • Check the time and which building: town church or Holy Trinity at Charlton
  • Confirm whether the service is in the church or a nearby hall
  • Check access: step-free entry, seating, toilets
  • Check parking and walking distance
  • Find out what's on for children and whether they stay in for the whole service
  • For baptisms, weddings or funerals, contact the parish in advance—not on the day
A quick check of these six points will save a wasted journey, especially around Easter and Christmas when service times and locations change.
  • The time, and which building: the town church or Holy Trinity at Charlton.
  • Whether the service is in the church itself or in a hall nearby.
  • Access: step-free entry, seating and toilets.
  • Parking at that end of town, and how far you are happy to walk.
  • Anything laid on for children, and whether they stay in for the whole service.

For anything dated, the live listings are the place to look rather than a fixed page. Church and chapel entries in our directory are free, any Featured listing is labelled, and every page takes corrections if you spot something out of date.

Frequently asked questions

Can you just turn up to a church service in Wantage?

Yes. You do not need to book, be a member or tell anyone in advance. Check the time on that church’s own website first, since patterns change around Christmas, Easter and the school holidays. Arriving a few minutes early helps, as someone on the door can point you to a seat and explain where children go during the service.

How do you arrange a christening at the parish church?

Contact the parish rather than turning up on the day. In the Church of England a baptism usually takes place at a service in the parish where you live or where you worship, so the parish will check that and talk through possible dates. They will also explain what happens during the service and who needs to be there. Independent churches set their own arrangements.

Can you marry in a Wantage church if you live elsewhere?

Often, yes, but it depends on your connection to the parish. Church of England rules recognise several qualifying links, such as living in the parish, having been baptised there, or having worshipped there regularly over a period. The parish can tell you whether your link counts and what notice is required. Independent churches set their own rules, so ask them directly before fixing a date.

Are the village churches open during the week?

It varies. Some are unlocked during daylight hours, others are kept locked with a keyholder living nearby. The notice in the porch or on the gate normally says which applies and gives a contact. If you are travelling out from town to see a particular building, it is worth ringing or emailing first, especially in winter when fewer people are about.

Where can I find carol services in December?

Dates are set fresh each year, so use the dated listings on What’s on rather than a fixed page. Also check the churches’ own sites and the noticeboards in the villages, because smaller carol services are not always advertised in town. Christingle and candlelit services tend to fill up, so arriving early gives you a better chance of a seat.

How far is Holy Trinity at Charlton from the town centre?

Charlton sits about 1.3 km east of Wantage Market Place as the crow flies, so allow a little more by road or on foot. It is part of the same Church of England parish as the town church, which means services are shared across the two buildings. Check the parish site to see which building a particular service is in before you set off.
