Wantage Neighbourhood Plan
Neighbourhood plans let town and parish councils write planning policies for their own area, which then carry legal weight when planning applications are decided. The Wantage Neighbourhood Plan, prepared by Wantage Town Council, became part of the statutory development plan on 1 May 2025. It covers the period to 2031.
What it covers
The plan does not allocate sites for new housing. Instead it focuses on how Wantage looks and works, through ten land-use policies:
- Town centre: a defined Town Centre Policy Area to support shops and activity, and a vision for more pedestrian space in the Market Place
- Jobs: protection of existing employment sites
- Design: general principles, character-area guidance and the types of homes needed
- Green infrastructure: a network of green spaces, special guidance for the Letcombe Brook corridor and designated Local Green Spaces
- Manor Road Memorial Recreation Ground: support for improving leisure facilities there
- Community assets: protection of valued community buildings and spaces
It also sets out community aspirations that are not planning policy. These include traffic management and Market Place pedestrianisation, long-stay car and coach parking, better cycle and walking routes, and support for a Grove station.
By the numbers
- 10 land-use policies
- 2023 to 2031 plan period
- In force since 1 May 2025
Why it matters
Planning officers and inspectors must now take the plan into account on applications in Wantage parish. It has been added to the evidence for the Joint Local Plan examination. The county council’s Market Place improvements and the Joint Local Plan’s strategy for Wantage both echo its call for more pedestrian space in the town centre.
How to follow it
The made plan, the examiner’s report and background documents are on the Vale council’s Wantage Neighbourhood Plan page.
