Introduction

Step into a Dickensian wonderland at Wantage's December Evening festivities!

Description

Wantage Dickensian Evening

Friday 2nd December 2022, 6pm until 9pm

Every year on the first Friday of December, Wantage hosts the Dickensian Evening in the market place, where the statue of King Alfred stands. Festive activities can also be enjoyed in Wantage Parish Church and the Vale and Downland Museum, as well as various adjoining roads.

To accommodate the event, Wantage Marketplace and the roads leading to it will be closed from 4pm onwards on 2nd December 2022.

The Wantage Dickensian Evening is a free community event organised by a team of volunteers, supported by Wantage Town Council and local sponsors. This event has a Christmas feel with seasonal music and light, and offers a range of activities for all guests.

In the last few years, the event has grown to include charity and commercial stalls, community groups, local artists and performers presenting their seasonal programme, as well as Christmas activities for children. Guests can enjoy Father Christmas arriving to his Grotto on a sleigh drawn by a magical sparkly pony, real reindeer, donkeys from the Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary, switch on of the Christmas Lights by the Mayor of Wantage and local radio presenter, Christmas Carols with Wantage Silver Band and the Parish Church Choir, Icknield Way Morris Men and folk band Greengage. Additionally, a fun fair will also be present on the night.
