Wantage Silver Band

The Wantage Silver Band is one of the oldest brass bands in England, having been founded in 1871. The band has a long and glorious history of performing in the town of Wantage and beyond.

Originally known as the Wantage Town Silver Band, the group has been providing entertainment to residents ever since its founding. With many members signing up for multiple decades, this family-oriented band is beloved by locals for providing music for special occasions like charity events and military parades.

The band currently consists of more than fifty musicians who are led by a professional conductor. They play a wide variety of musical styles ranging from classical to modern pop songs. This helps them appeal to a wide range of audiences.

The band’s repertoire often includes traditional English folk songs such as ‘Widdecombe Fair’ and marches such as ‘Colonel Bogey’, along with popular hits from artists like Adele, Ed Sheeran, and Coldplay. Their concerts bring together all generations in celebration of music that spans centuries.

One unique feature of the Wantage Silver Band is their annual tour abroad – they have played across Europe over the years with visits to France, Spain, Germany and more recently Malta. They have also performed at prestigious events including the National Fete at Windsor Castle and the opening ceremony of Tower Bridge in London.

As well as playing publicly, the Wantage Silver Band run workshops for young people between 10-19 years old interested in learning how to play brass instruments or singing in a choir – giving budding musicians an opportunity to get involved in music making while developing their skills under guidance from experienced tutors.

Whether you’re attending one of their public performances or taking part in their workshops, it’s clear that getting involved with this iconic brass band is always an enjoyable experience!
